Undergoing IV sedation requires preparation and adherence to specific guidelines to ensure patient safety and the effectiveness of the treatment. Before sedation, patients undergo a thorough assessment to determine their suitability for edation and to discuss the procedure in detail. Written consent is obtained, and patients receive instructions on how to prepare for the day of the procedure, including fasting guidelines and medication adjustments.
On the day of your procedure, we recommend that you:
- The patient will have nothing to eat or drink (nothing by mouth) after 12am the night before the appointment (unless otherwise specified)
- Continue taking routine medications unless advised otherwise by your doctor.
- Communicate any changes in your health or medical history with our periodontists.
After your procedure:
- You will not be able to drive yourself home. Arrange for someone to take you home, as well as someone to remain with you for several hours until the sedation effects fully wear off.
- Rest the remainder of the day.
- Do not operate machinery, consume alcohol or engage in strenuous activities until recovered.
- We recommend that you avoid making any significant decisions until fully recovered.
- Children undergoing anesthesia/conscious sedation should have direct parental supervision for 24 hours following anesthesia/conscious sedation.
