Our orthodontist may use extraoral or intraoral anchorage systems to allow teeth to move toward or away from the anchorage system. Intraoral anchorage systems usually require another tooth to serve as an anchorage source to move other teeth. When creating an intraoral anchorage system, there are actions and reactions within the system which are not the most efficient. To minimize negative reactions or if an absolute anchorage system is needed, we use temporary anchorage devices, or TADs, which are mini implants inserted into the bone.

TADs are used to intrude teeth, protract posterior teeth, retract teeth or serve as a tooth anchor for missing teeth. TADs can be used with both traditional braces or with Invisalign® clear aligners. The biggest advantage of using TADs for intrusion is that they do not change the position of your front teeth where they can become more gummy with the traditional anchorage system.

Adult Invisalign & TAD Placement

“I just had titanium implants placed to close my open bite… painless, no downtime… From start to finish, Dr. Kim explained everything to me and any questions I did have, she answered them completely. “

TADs offer several benefits, such as:

  • Enhanced Precision: Allows for more accurate tooth movement and alignment.
  • Minimized Need for Extractions: Can reduce the need to remove teeth by providing additional support.
  • Shortened Treatment Time: Often leads to faster treatment outcomes by improving efficiency.
  • Improved Patient Comfort: Reduces discomfort compared to traditional methods.
  • Versatile Application: Can be used for various orthodontic corrections, including complex cases.
  • Stability in Movement: Provides a stable anchor point, ensuring teeth are moved effectively without unwanted shifting.

Our orthodontist will monitor your treatment to determine how long your TADs should remain in place and ensure that your smile is progressing as planned.
